Benefits of Recyclable Polypropylene Bags for Life

In an era where environmental consciousness meets practical retail solutions, recyclable polypropylene (RPP) Bags for Life represent a significant step forward in sustainable packaging. These versatile bags offer numerous advantages that benefit retailers, consumers and the environment.

For retailers, Bags for Life not only provide an income stream but more importantly possibly, these help to position brands positively with eco-conscious consumers looking to the retailers they shop with to actively demonstrate their sustainable commitments.

However- not all Bags for Life are created equal! With so many different materials now available such as Bioplastics (bio bags) which contain ingredients such as corn, potato starch and sugarcane, or cotton and jute which are all derived from renewable sources. It becomes difficult to understand which is best in providing value for the retailer and for the customer in terms of product longevity as well as recyclability at end of life.

Environmental Impact

RPP bags significantly reduce environmental impact compared to traditional single-use plastic bags. When properly recycled, they can be transformed into new products, helping to support more of a circular economy model approach that minimises waste.

A single Bag for Life can replace hundreds of single-use plastic bags over its lifetime, substantially reducing plastic pollution and landfill waste and the need for precious new resources and raw materials.

Woven vs Non-Woven RRP Bags for Life

Engineered for longevity and repeated use, polypropylene bags for life provide a good alternative to single use plastic bags. Made from woven or non-woven polypropylene, these bags provide superior strength compared to conventional plastic bags. However, there is a difference between how woven and non-woven bags perform as well as their sustainability.

Woven bags are constructed by strips of polypropylene simply pressed together which then has to be laminated to improve strength. This lamination which is essentially a plastic coating unfortunately results in the introduction of virgin plastic. This then has an impact on ease of recyclability which is critical when it comes to EPR and could hinder retailers working towards their sustainability goals.

Non-woven bags are manufactured differently and rather than strips of polypropylene being pressed together, the polymers are exposed to heat and spun forming long strong threads. These threads are incredibly strong when used to manufacture bags, and importantly do not require that additional plastic lamination – making the end product far more sustainable.

Resistant to tears and punctures, non-woven bags offers a durable and lightweight alternative to single use plastic bags.

Non-Woven RRP vs Cotton Bags for Life

Cotton bags have become increasingly popular and have certainly become a consumer favourite due to perceived environmental benefits. However examining the initial environmental impact during manufacturing – cotton bags require more water and energy than RRP. In fact each tote takes 1141 liters of water and one kilo of cotton requires almost 10,000 liters of water so it’s not always apparent which is the best decision for the environment. Cotton is a resource-intensive crop requiring numerous pesticides, fertilizers and water making its environmental footprint  much larger perhaps than possibly realised.

RRP bags are typically cheaper to produce as well as having a better cost-per-use profile. And when it comes to end of life, RRP bags are fully recyclable where cotton bags are biodegradable which while good for the environment, does limit it’s on-going value beyond the original product necessitating production of new bags.

Non-Woven RRP vs Jute Bags for Life

Jute bags certainly offer more than cotton bags in terms of reduced environmental impact. Being a natural product, Jute production has a lower water, chemical and pesticide requirement. Naturally biodegradable, the drawback yet again is around recyclability. With a much higher cost of production compared to RRP bags, this is exacerbated by its limitations again in life beyond the original product.

Bags for Life and the Circular Economy

All Bags for Life do play a crucial role in promoting circular economy principles which help to reduce the demand of raw materials, supporting a closed-loop manufacturing process.

But one of the best outcomes has to be how they encourage conscious consumer behaviour by using their bags time after time. They help to increase awareness of plastic pollution, promoting more sustainable shopping habits generally. The bags also helps to influence other shoppers to make more sustainable choices. Who wants to be the only person at the till buying yet another single use plastic bag for their shopping!

Retailer benefits when providing Bags For Life

For retailers offering recyclable polypropylene bags, there are multiple advantages:

  • Enhanced brand image through sustainable practices
  • Reduced packaging costs over time
  • Compliance with environmental regulations
  • Improved customer loyalty through environmental commitment
  • Potential for branded marketing opportunities
  • Reduced need to purchase disposable bags
  • Lower environmental costs
  • Potential savings from plastic bag charges and taxes
  • Revenue stream from sales

Acopia have developed a new Bag for Life, this sits alongside our other plastic reducing and plastic eliminating products brought to market specifically to support retailers on their journey to improved sustainability.

Our non-woven bags, made from 100% recycled polypropylene bags are incredibly durable and engineered with heat stitched seams for added strength.

With a large capacity and opportunities for full colour printing for branding and messaging,  these bags also provide Retailers with the option of generating sales from this attractive Point of Sale item. We estimate there is scope for achieving significant margins and robust profit, as much as a 100% mark up.

Eco Shopping Bags

The adoption of these bags is not just about replacing single-use plastics, it’s about embracing a more sustainable approach to retail and consumption. By choosing RPP Bags for Life, we can all take a small but significant step toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

As we look toward a more sustainable future, recyclable polypropylene Bags for Life represent more than just a shopping accessory – they represent a commitment to better environmental stewardship.

Their continued adoption will play a crucial role in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable retail practices.
